What is a Giclee Fine Art Print?

A giclee fine art print is a print made by a special printer which sprays millions of microscopically small drops of archival inks to create art. This results in an amazingly smooth and consistent image true to the original art work. Giclee has better color accuracy and resolution than other printing methods. A giclee fine art print is the closest reproduction of an original artwork that is currently possible.

Giclee is becoming the new standard for top quality printing in the art world. Major museums, galleries and artists have adopted Giclee printing.

Where does the word "Giclee" come from?

Giclee (pronounced zee-clay) is a French word that means a spray of liquid.

Can Giclee prints become valuable?

Yes. The evidence for this are the high prices achieved at art auctions. For example, a giclee print by Wolfgangs Tillmans sold for US $22,800 at Phillips auction house in New York in April 2004.

What materials does Fine Art Prints Store use to make giclee prints?

We use the best quality inks and paper we can find:

  • We use the latest pigmented inks which offer incredible light fastness: 75 years for unframed prints; and 200 years for prints framed behind UV filtering glass.
  • We use heavyweight 100% cotton paper imported from Germany. This is archival grade, acid free and exceeds ISO standard 9706. It is beautiful paper made from clear spring water and top quality cotton fibre. It is manufactured to be extremely age resistant which means it is categorized as being suitable for lastimg more than 100 years (this is the highest life expectancy category of any paper). It is far better than paper the original antiques prints were printed on and is widely used by museums.
  • We hand finish our prints with PremierArt spray. Wilhelm Imaging, the only real authorities on the issue, indicate that this coating can increase the longevity of our prints to well beyond 200 years.
